🇺🇸 AIoT: From Systems that Observe to Systems that Understand
A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to visit Colombia, where I got to see firsthand the next generation of IoT devices, now evolving into a new stage: AIoT (Artificial Intelligence of Things).
This integration between artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things marks a profound shift. Devices no longer just collect and transmit data — they now learn from their environment and, based on what they learn, perform their own analysis and make autonomous decisions.
For years, in the security field, we’ve heard about “artificial intelligence” applied to cameras, but in reality, what we had were video analytics systems: line crossing, facial recognition, motion detection, or people counting. All of these are parameterized, rule-based processes — useful, yes, but lacking true learning capability.
What I saw in Colombia was different. These new cameras learn, adapt, and recognize qualitative patterns, even attitudes or behaviors. They don’t just detect an object or a person — they understand context: they can tell the difference between someone walking calmly and someone acting nervously or aggressively.
This evolution is powered by deep learning models that enable devices not only to capture images but to interpret intentions and act predictively.
It completely changes the way we understand security and redefines the role of professionals in the field: we move from monitoring events to anticipating behaviors.
Without a doubt, we’re entering a new technological era where systems don’t just see — they comprehend. And this shift, already underway, will transform how we design, operate, and envision the secure environments of the future.
Video surveillance no longer just observes… it understands.
